How the Flood Was Responded To

Ever since the August when it happened, a major clean up operation has been going on in Boscastle. First of all, buildings were checked and secured down so if another flash flood happened soon the buildings would most likely be safe, and not fall down. To check this, buildings inspectors went around and looked at all the buildings to make sure they were OK! This took a couple of days, and after everything had been checked people were allowed to visit their homes and see what they could take with them, if they were leaving (or, if they could move back there). The supplies to all necessary things (e.g.: electricity, gas, water, and the phone line) had been restored so the people who had unaffected houses would be able to try and live a normal life again. When there was nothing that could be done for a building, it would have to be demolished as it would impose a health and safety risk. In the rebuild, the council took into account the needs of the town if another flood were to happen soon. The Environmental Agency removed debris and cleared out the river so it could run free again. The bridge was rebuilt, but higher so boulders being carried down the river in a flood would not get stuck. Also, the flood banks and river walls were raised to prevent the river overflowing again. On top of this, many people donated money to help those affected rebuild their life, and their town.
